May 3, 1872 Ð Beaver College Looks to Dignified Future
Upon bestowing the proud title of Beaver College upon its university, faculty and student body alike are predicting a dignified future for the institution, located in the happily eponymous burg of Beaver, Pennsylvania. ÒTo-day, we foresee a future in which the public will think only of academic excellence when they come upon the humble beaver,Ó beamed school president Arthur T. Jamison at a Saturday after-noon titling ceremony on the schoolÕs grassy campus. ÒIt is a name of which we shall truly be forever proud.Ó

May 3, 1872 Ð Beaver College Looks to Dignified FutureMathematics professor Donald W. Trumbull believed that the name spoke to a sense of resourcefulness. ÒSome may jeer at the very notion of a college named after the damp, malodorous beaver,Ó he allowed. ÒBut in truth, the beaver is a wily, resilient thing. I think it to be a fine name indeed.Ó First-year student Arnold R. Luxton forthrightly agreed. ÒThere is nothing in this world I enjoy so much as the sight of a furry little beaver,Ó he said, smiling widely. ÒIt is play-ful, certainly, but when it must do its business, it can become quite serious.Ó

Jamison held that the collegeÕs title would stand as long as its thick stone walls. ÒFor certain, we will undergo changes in the decades ahead; we may find ourselves in a world that is coarser; less refined,Ó he reflected. ÒYet through it all, we in this area will be able to rely upon one happy constant: this proud name of Beaver.Ó Science professor Elam Q. Hibbard was likewise contented. ÒFor hundreds of years, the most venerable names in all academia will resound with the likes of HarvardÉ PrincetonÉ and Beaver.Ó

Following the ceremony, the school president revealed that other considered names included Tit University, to honor the beloved songbird, and Labia College, after the great Danish explorer Henrik Labia.

March 2, 1968 Ð New Stadium to Either be Named After Heroic Veterans or Bank
The name of South Philadelphia's new sports stadium became slightly clearer yesterday, as Council members revealed that the park will either be named after America's heroic war veterans or a suitably large financial institution. ÒJust as with the Baker Bowl and Shibe Park, this stadium's name will become an important part of our civic identity,Ó said Councilman W. Thatcher Longstreth at a special Council session. ÒThat's why we've taken our time in narrowing it down to two worthy choices: our nation's brave military heroes, or an enormously wealthy bank.Ó

March 2, 1968 Ð New Stadium to Either be Named After Heroic Veterans or BankCouncilman William Cibotti said that the area's large population of veterans led Council to consider a military-related title for the future home of the Eagles and Phillies. ÒThousands of our men have fought and died in World War II, Korea, and of course, Viet Nam,Ó he said. ÒSo it's important that we pay tribute to these courageous fightersÑunless, of course, we do end up naming it after a bank.Ó Fellow Councilman David Cohen added, ÒThis decision will resonate throughout the city for decades to come. It would be a shame to take such a responsibility lightly.Ó

According to the Pennsylvania WFV's Rick Dorsey, however, either of the two names would make a fine choice. ÒClearly, we would love it for Philadelphia to honor those who've given their very lives for our freedom,Ó he said. ÒBut we understand that, yes, our nation's banks should be honored, too.Ó Local sports fan Joe Fanelli, though, seemed less convinced. ÒWhatever they pick, I hope it's a name we can be proud ofÑlike Fenway Park or Forbes Field,Ó he said. ÒAlthough, tell you the truth, it might be kind of weird if they named it after a bank.Ó
